キタ━━━(゚∀゚)━━━

Man, this project was a mission…

Actually, it was finished on Wed evening, but I was too tired to take pics. But it’s all over now. I present Strike Freedom!!

For any budding modelers out there, a word of advice, make sure you have PLENTY of paint so you don’t get frustrated twiddling your thumbs while waiting for more to arrive!!

For those interested, previous posts for this project can be found

Here (Part 2)

Here (Part 3)

and here (part 4)

Comparison pics and other poses after the jump.

Sorry about the difference in white balance. I was too lazy to go back and sync them… Generally speaking, the painted version, aside from losing the disgusting gold joints is also a little darker. The darker shade also helped it lose the Plastic-y look from the out-of-box version.

I have to admit that this kit was pretty hard going for a while, and it wasn’t just because of the running out of paint…

When I started the kit, it was late on Sunday evening and I worked like crazy up till 3am. The only reason I stopped was because I had to go to work the next morning. But once it was finished, I found it quite hard to muster up the drive to continue painting it compared to figures. I think a large part of why is due to the fact that, unlike figures, gunpla kits look quite nice straight out of the box. Also, since the parts are colour molded, you have a good picture of what it will look like if you stick to the standard colour scheme (which I usually do). With figures, you get to see it almost come to life with colour while gundam kits feel more like you are simply adding to what is already there!

However, that doesn’t mean that I’m giving up on Gunpla kits!! I just feel that I get a greater sense of satisfaction from completing figures than gundams. I still have Destiny and Unicorn in my queue, so there’s no way i’m giving up now so that will give me my mecha fix for now!

I swear that the combined cannon is the stupidest weapon I have seen in a long while with next to no use. Heck, it makes posing annoying because the arms can’t reach all the way to balance the pose!!

In terms of slight modifications, I have already mentioned the separate fingers mod i did with the hands.

The pic above shows how it helps wrap more tightly around the weapon handle. And the pic below shows how you can to a “just bring it” pose!

I was tempted to make the fingers fully articulated by drilling holes through the sections and threading a metal rod through them to allow for further posability of the fingers but decided against the idea as I didn’t know if the rods would eventually break under the strain of being constantly bent nor if it would adversely affect any other functions (like holding the beam sabers). Shame, otherwise I would have SF giving everyone the finger!

One other mod I did was in relation to the DRAGOON pods.

I didn’t really like the idea that the beam from each pod just came out of a large black square, so I drilled an opening and added some brass tubing o provide a nozzle/aperture for the beam to come out of. And after much (5 minutes) thinking, I decided to keep the colour as it was. As a remnant of the gold parts!

And this is the back of strike freedom, which almost all ZAFT mobile suit pilots would prefer to see!

Being the full burst version, I thought it would be best to actually do the full burst pose!!

Unfortunately, doing so presented 2 problems. 1 My photobox is too small to accommodate SF with the action base! and 2. The pose is terrible for photo shots. There is a legitimate reason for reusing stock footage for that part!!! Most angles simply come off as strange or just ugly!

Overall though, I have no complaints about S. It’s a decent Kit with a couple of tricks and the usual high standard of MG kits. And without the gold joints, it looks pretty damn good to boot!!

And that’s the end of our photosession. For the regulars (are there any?) there will be no blog entry next week as it’s Christmas!

Hope you all have a good one and this blog will return afterwards with another project, A devil clad in white, who will offer you power with an unknown cost…
